Galway community projects were honoured at the the all-Ireland Pride of Place community awards on Monday evening (May 16) in Killarney.

In its short existence the Galway National Park City (GNPC) initiative, based on connecting people and nature in an urban environment and with an sustainability ethos, has had a positive impact on the local landscape providing opportunities and collaborations for citizens and organisations from different sectors to creatively work together on successfully developing new pioneering environmental and sustainability programmes.

3.6m people or 81% of the population watched TG4 at some stage during 2021. The average viewing share for 2021 was 1.89%, up from 1.83% in 2020, and there was an increase in primetime share from 1.92% in 2020 to 2.05% in 2021. This increase is the first time TG4 has had over 2% share in primetime since 2013.

The recent United Nations’ Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report signed off by 195 governments is a truly terrifying read. It makes clear that Global Warming- characterised by more intense and frequent heatwaves, storms, rainfall, flooding and melting glaciers as well as rising sea levels, is due to human activity. It further stated that no part of the world is safe from its consequences and that these changes are accelerating.

There is a Greek saying that a society becomes great when people plant trees, the shade of which they will never sit under. There have been many such people in Galway, and my hope is that there will be many more. Indeed, our society needs a constant flow of people whose unselfish actions make better the place they live and work.

On Monday morning, Gray Lass (affectionately known as “Snowy”) and her colt foal along with a small delegation of Kylemore Abbey staff made the 280km journey from Kylemore Abbey in Connemara to Áras an Uachtaráin in the Phoenix Park. “Snowy” and her six-week-old foal will take up residence in the front paddock of Áras an Uachtaráin for four months.
